AMATEUR RADIO
Radio communication has interested me for many years. Before becoming a teenager, I was the proud owner (and builder) of several "crystal sets". I became a Short Wave Listener and discovered Amateur Radio. I joined the Radio Society of Great Britain soon after leaving school, as a Corporate Member - BRS 20313.
Whilst doing my National Service in REME I took and passed my Radio Amateurs Examination. After several years of progressing in my career in telecomms, getting married and raising two young sons, I obtained my Class B Transmitting Licence Callsign G8AAT. I failed to progress to a full Class A licence because I was terrible on learning the Morse Code (No longer a requirement for a Full Licence!) and it took a lot of coercion and tutoring by David G3THC, and Arthur GD2HDZ, before I succesfully took my morse exam in Ramsey I.O.M in 1979, to become G4IUH.
I became a member of the Southgate & Finchley RSGB Group in 1953, joining the Grafton Radio Society shortly after. When we moved up to South Northants I joined the Wolverton & District Radio Society. I served as a committee member for several years, seeing it's change of name to the North Bucks Radio Society then to the Milton Keynes Radio Society.
